| BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK
Sudan: The Politics of War and Peace sheds
valuable light on the conflict in South Sudan which has afflicted the
country for nearly five decades taking an enamors toll on the livelihood
and security of the population of the south in the particular and the
country at large.

The book also shows the historical evolution of
the Southern resistance which began immediately before independence
through the Anya l movement which spanned seventeen years until an
agreement was singed in 1972 in Addis Ababa.
Second, it highlights why and how the second phase of the southern
resistance movements started in 1983 and continued until the early part of
1004 . Further, the book tries to analyze the inter-play between the
Northern Political actors and their southern counter-parts in the context
of the overall social, political and constitutional history of the Sudan.
Third, the book examines the responses of successive
Sudanese governments to the southern rebellion movements led to Anya l
and ll. it then shows the circumstances which led to the emergence of the
mainstream political and military movements known as the SPLM/A and how
and why other smaller movements such as the SPDR split from it and
subsequently broke away from the government to rejoin it and form a united
front in the early years of 2000.
Fourth, Sudan: The Politics of War and Peace
also looks at the various mediation efforts undertaken by different
organizations such as IGAD and countries of the middle East and North
Africa as well as Nigeria, Germany and Norway which took open and discrete
initiatives to resolve the conflict. Finally, it assesses the changed
policy of United States and special measures which it took it leverage the
peace process in league with the European Union for the successful
conclusion of the signing of various protocols on security arrangements,
wealth and power sharing as well as the status of the contested areas in
the Sudan via the negotiations which took place at Machacos and Naivasha.
