The Concept of Democracy                                                                                             

Democracy is increasingly gaining popularity and acceptance in the political life of the contemporary world. In Recent years, it has been practiced in a number of countries. In the direct democracy of Greece, every citizen participated in the political administration. In such a system, people turned out as groups and voted in the decision-making process. In the contemporary world, the system was institutionalized and transformed in to a practice through which political representatives are elected and act on behalf of the people based on the provisions of the constitution. It is this type of system which paved the way for a government of the people by the people. 

In a democratic order, there are basic rights and freedoms which are formally enshrined in the constitution. These rights include; the rights of freedom of the press and expression, the rights of peaceful assembly and organization, and the rights of participation in the socio-economic and political life of the country. These are considered as inalienable human rights which can’t be modified on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or any other grounds.
